CranoakLabs Story

CranoakLabs began as the awsandbeyond meetups in 2013 — a grassroots effort to help on‑prem engineers understand the rapidly changing world of cloud computing. At the time, AWS was accelerating faster than most enterprise teams could adapt.

The core group included:

Security consultants
Infrastructure engineers
Middleware specialists
Systems administrators

These were the teams most impacted by the cloud shift. The meetups became a place to learn, experiment, and share practical knowledge about how real organizations were modernizing.

The Evolution of Cloud and DevOps

As cloud adoption accelerated, the community naturally moved from traditional DevOps into DevSecOps and eventually GitOps.
Each step added more automation, more security, and more consistency across environments.

DevOps introduced automation and CI/CD.
DevSecOps embedded security directly into delivery workflows.
GitOps made Git the single source of truth for infrastructure and applications.

Today, these same foundations form the basis of MLOps, where model training, deployment, and monitoring follow the same patterns of automation, security, and reproducibility.

Consistent Challenges Across Every Era

Across AWS, Docker, Kubernetes, DevOps, DevSecOps, GitOps, and now MLOps, the same challenges appear again and again:

Identity — who can access what, and how is that enforced?
Observability — logs, metrics, traces, and understanding system behavior.
Availability — keeping systems resilient across clouds and clusters.
Security Validation — proving that controls work, not just assuming they do.

These challenges shaped the original awsandbeyond meetups and continue to shape CranoakLabs today.
